4 Month Sleep Regression?
Around the age of 4 months babies are transitioning from a newborn sleep pattern into a more consolidated sleep pattern. They are learning so much and growing that a lot of changes are happening quickly. As a newborn they have shorter naps and awake windows and than they transition into longer awake windows and shorter sleep windows and sometimes just when you think you go the whole sleep pattern down it can actually go in reverse.
Before I had our daughter we were told get your sleep in now because once she is here you won’t sleep again. Than as a newborn I just kept hearing about this 4 month sleep regression.
As I’m typing this out daughter is taking her nap and is about 1 hour in. She has always been a great sleeper; from birth and even up to now she has a great sleep schedule during the day and sleeps through the night. Only 4 times has she woken up in the middle of the night in 7 months.
You can say we just got lucky with her sleep or is it because from day 1 we set her circadian rhythm and sleep schedule to match ours and so she would get optimal night sleep.
I have previous posts about the Circadian Rhythm, night time routines, and even routines and how important all these are. We implemented these with her from the very beginning.
Each morning she gets up between 6-7:30am and we change her diaper, get her dressed, she takes her DHA and Vit D supplement and we go outside, go for a walk and get the morning sun. This tells our bodies it’s time to be awake and start our day. Around 6pm we shower, she picks out her Jammie’s and we get ready for bed. We turn the lights off and turn on the salt lamp and we lay down for bed. She’s usually asleep between 6:30-7:30pm and she sleeps all night. She will nurse through the night but she won’t actually wake up.
Even when I change her diaper she is not awake because we keep the room dark except for the salt lamp which is a warm orange light.
During her naps we close the blinds and put on her sound machine and I let her sleep as long as she wants. Some days she will only sleep 45 mins and some she will sleep 2+ hours.
With all this routine and circadian rhythm consistency she didn’t experience a 4 month sleep regression. We kept waiting for it to happen but nope. The only thing was around that time she actually went to bed a little earlier because she was so tired for all the growing and learning.
I know all babies are different but my hope is that our routine is working and that it can help you and your baby to get better sleep and you both can have less sleepless nights.
