Hair Care Routine

In the past I have always had really thin blah type hair and I couldn’t really do much with it, like I would curl it but than like 10 mins later the curls would fall out and it would be straight again. I used the usual name brand products in my hair not knowing that what I was doing was stripping my hair of all its natural oils and exposing myself to a lot of harmful and allergenic chemicals.

Most name brand hair care products have about 95% chemicals and than the water they use is pretty gross on top of that. Some of the more common chemicals are parabens, phthalates, triclosan, formaldehyde just to name a few and if you check out my household cleaner blog I talk about the effects these have on the body.

When I met my husband he taught me about the shampoos stripping my hair and introduced me to the “no shampoo” way, which is running your hair under warm water, massaging the scalp and removing all hair products. You use a boar’s hair brush to brush the natural oils down the length of the hair. Doing this has made my hair so much thicker, manageable and more stylable, I have been able to curl my hair and it will stay curled for days. I did this for about 5 years and my hair was pretty short for awhile but now I am letting it grow back out and it is not happy with this type of routine. I have seen from other people who have long hair that this works for them but my hair seems really dry and knotty now, so I have started researching really clean shampoo and conditioners and only use them 2-3 times a week.

I got a shampoo bar which I have been pretty happy with because it reduces a lot of the plastic waste, you rub it on your scalp and hair and it suds up pretty good. I like this but my hair needs some conditioning also; I tired the whole Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with water and leave in your hair than rinse it out to help but that didn’t seem to do anything for me.

I found a few different brands of hair care products that have really clean ingredients so I am going to try them out and lets see how they work for me. When I get my hair dyed (this is like the only chemicals I have left in my life) I will go 2-3 weeks with no water contact to let the dye attach to the follicles better and than just using water makes it last for a few months and stay nice and vibrant.

Another very important thing with the brush is that it will collect the oils and stuff from your hair so you need to clean it on a regular basis, if you let it build up it will transfer to your hair and create a build up.

I have had people tell me that no they couldn’t do this no shampooing thing because their hair is too greasy for that, and yes in the beginning your hair will be very greasy about day 3-7 but after that your hair starts regulating the oil production and it becomes a lot less greasy. The reason its greasy when you don’t wash it is because by washing it you’re stripping the oils and the scalp has to keep producing a lot more to replace it. Even when you switch to the only washing every 2-3 days your hair will regulate to that also. It is best to get products that help nourish the hair and scalp and not strip it.

Update: I decided to try Native Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner once a week and wow what a difference it has made for me. Using these once a week and than the other 6 days using just warm water has been working great, I can brush my hair easily each day, all the way up to day 6 of no shampooing and my hair feels really nice now also. Going from being really dry and frizzy to soft and full of body again.
