Daytime Blue Light Exposure

What is blue light and why we need to worry about it during the day also!

Blue light is a spectrum of light that we can see and is mostly coming from our electronics in our daily lives.

Yes we get blue light from the sun naturally but it is a little different. When we get blue light from the sun it’s natural and not artificial, we only get it in the peak of the afternoon and we are getting it combined with the other colors so it’s not as harsh and harmful.

With artificial blue light from our phones, tvs, tablets, computers, overhead lights, even our alarm clocks it can be very disrupting and damaging to our eyes and our overall health.

The blue light from the sun in the afternoon tells our bodies it’s day time and we need to be awake and getting things done. But when the sun goes down we now turn on our bright led lights and electronics and stay up past when it gets dark and we continue to tell our bodies it’s time to be awake.

This is one reason why so many people have problems going to sleep, staying asleep and actually getting good restorative sleep.

Studies have shown that in a completely dark room with even just a dime sized blue light hitting your skin can disrupt your sleep cycles. Yes you may be sleeping through the night but your brain and body aren’t going through the full proper cycles.

Not only does this overexposure to artificial blue light affect our brains and bodies it is affecting our eye health. Being exposed to this blue light all day and into the night time can damage our eyes leading to blindness over time. Kids are needing glasses earlier and earlier in life because they are exposed to tvs, phones, and tablets early in life.

Not sure if you are getting overexposure from blue lights? Some symptoms are fatigue, fatigue with the eyes, feeling tired but can’t sleep at night, headaches and dehydration.

Since these electronics are so integrated into our lives getting ride of them is not really an option so what are we supposed to do about it? Here are a few things me and my family has done and you can do also to help.

Get outside in the first morning rays which are orange, get the setting sun rays so your body knows it’s time to start winding down, get daytime blue blocker glasses which block out some of the blue light and helps greatly with headaches and fatigue. Switch out your LED lights to incandescent lights, reddish orange lights or even pink Himalayan salt light bulbs if you need light during the day. Also getting out into the afternoon sun for even just 10 mins helps.

Stay tuned for my blue light in the evening time post and how to help with over exposure.
